Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice with Griffith University online through Open University Australia
Why did you choose to study online?
My decision to study online was driven by a few things, the main one being flexibility. I was studying on campus, which required four hours of travel a day, five days a week. I desperately wanted to reduce it so I could spend more time at home around friends and family.
Another factor was the degree itself. The subjects available in Griffith University’s Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice Online through Open Universities Australia (OUA) were far superior to those available at other universities.
What are the advantages of studying online?
Flexibility is the main advantage, being able to study when you have time and fit it around work, family, friends and hobbies. With OUA, you have the flexibility to vary your study load, whether full-time, part-time or taking additional subjects.
Comfort is another benefit. Studying in your own home or in a peaceful place like a park or library – it’s up to you.
Also, through OUA, you don’t need an ATAR to apply for a degree. You can enroll in the first four subjects as a pathway and once you pass them, you can go straight to the degree.
What did you learn that you didn’t expect?
I learned more about myself than anything else. Knowing that I am capable of achieving higher whether I am on campus or at home. I am able to thrive no matter the situation. I achieved more than I thought possible by receiving the Griffith University Award for Academic Excellence in 2017 and 2018. I never thought that I would reach such high academic honors, but I learned that anything is possible if you work hard.
What advice would you give to students considering online study?
Don’t feel overwhelmed about the whole process. Students think that studying online is very difficult because you are not on campus to ask questions. This is far from true! There is a lot of support available when you study online.
My advice to students considering online study is to do your research and ask as many questions as possible to prepare yourself for what it will be like. Knowing all your options and all the support services available will help you in the long run, more than you realize in the beginning!
